Welcome to the Literacy Program

The Financial Literacy Program is headed by Monterey Bay Chapter member and 2008 Director of Public Awareness, Cristofer A. Cabanillas, CFP®. The need to teach high school students the value of money management skills so that they would avoid financial pitfalls as they entered college or the workforce was recognized and the program was launched during the 2006-2007 school year at Central Coast High School. The program, called the Blue Star Program, was started in seven New York High Schools in 2003 and the company provides the materials used in the classroom. The curriculum is fit into the Economics course at the high school and the response has been encouraging with the first class of students graduating in June, 2007. The program covers topics ranging from budgeting, saving, taxation, insurance and investing – just to name a few. For the 2007-2008 school year, the program is in two schools, Central Coast High School and Monterey High School and is being looked at by Seaside High School as an after school program. In addition, there is potential interest from Harbor High School in Soquel. Members from the Monterey Bay Chapter of the FPA fill the role of giving guest lectures at the high schools.
